After yet another disappointing -- and disheartening -- season, change is the theme for the New York Islanders this summer. In is new team president and general manager Lou Lamoriello. Out is long-time GM Garth Snow and so, too, is head coach Doug Weight after only a year and a half on the job. Lamoriello has his work cut out from him with a wayward franchise that took major steps backwards the past two seasons. Let's take a look: Islanders' offseason to-do list1. Sign John Tavares Garth Snow did J.A. Happ Jersey not get it done this past season, JT's lastunder contract -- an extremely team-friendly one it should be noted. Now, Lou Lamoriello is on limited time, trying to extend Tavares before he hits unrestricted free agency on July 1. Certainly, Tavares could still still sign with the Islanders after fielding other offers, but given the chance to listen to other teams, why would he choose to remain with the Islanders? Unle s the Magic of Lou -- the belief that the 75-year-old executive will do away the decades-long dysfunction for the star-cro sed franchise -- takes hold, of course. Since taking the job, Lamoriello reportedly has been in daily contact with Tavares' representatives, so he's in there pitching, no question. Now he's got to be the closer, the finisher, and get Tavares signed or else it is hard to envision bright days ahead for the Isles. UPDATE: The latest rumors, as of June 21, are that the Islanders and Tavares Paul O'Neill Jersey are closing in on an eight-year contract extension. 2. Hire a coach Cro s this one off Lou's list. Lamoriello said he would get the "best coach available", and when officially re-signed from his post with the Capitals, the Isles top executive swooped in and quickly hired his new man, who earlier this month Greg Bird Jersey helped lead the Caps to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. And in his , Trotz mentioned he's already been in contact with John Tavares, helping Lamoriello to take care of the most important piece of offseason busine s. Gone are the days of low-cost, inexperienced coaches like Scott Gordon, Jack Capuano and Doug Weight. The Islanders now seem ready to do battle with the big boys in the NHL. MORE: Islanders' five best coaching candidates to replace Doug Weight 3. Sign Anders Lee to an extension After getting Tavares' name on a contract, signing Anders Lee to a contract extension is the next most important thing on Lamoriello's player personnel to-do list. Lee scored 34 goals two years ago and a career-high 40 this season -- a true low-maintenance, high-impactscorer. He makes $3.75 million on the final year of his deal before becoming a UFA next summer. The Islanders need to get him signed ahead of free agency, just as they did with Josh Bailey Don Larsen Jersey this past season. Lee needs to be a cornerstone player moving forward for the Isles. 4. Improve the team defensively The Islanders surrendered more goals than any team in the NHL this season. They can score, but they can't stop others from scoring. If the Islesare to be a legitimate contender, they need to improve defensively. That starts with coaching and moves hand-in-glove with personnel decisions. Trotz already acknowledged the team's defensive deficencies in his first chat with reporters, so that's a start. Calvin de Haan and Thomas Hickey are UFAs moving on from the Islanders most likely, so look for Lamoriello to test the free agent waters and perhaps make a deal or two to improve the team in this area. They need a true No. 1 goaltender badly, too. And if Tavares skates away, well, Lamoriello will be shopping for a top-line center to go along with Mat Barzal. Islanders 2018 draft preview Draft picks: 11th overall, 12th overall, 41st overall, 43rd overall, 72nd overall, 103rd overall, 134th overall, 196th overall The Islanders have eight selections in the 2018 draft, including a pair in both the first and second rounds. However, as a team that stockpiled its draft picks over the years with the belief that young players would be the foundation of the franchise -- to mixed results, it wouldn't be surprising to see Lamoriello move away from that game plan and deal some picks for players able to help immediately at the NHL level. Forward Josh Ho-Sang is the most intriguing -- and frustrating -- prospect in the pipeline, while defenseman Sebastian Aho Giancarlo Stanton Jersey could land a top-six spot nextyearafter a solid audition last season. The most important long-term prospects could be goaltenders Linus Soderstrom and Ilya Sorokin. Islanders free agent/trade targets Even if the Islanders sign John Tavares and Anders Lee, they have significant salary cap space -- which is important because they have plenty of holes to fill on the back end and in goal. Philipp Grubauer is linked to the Isles as their No.1 Roger Maris Jersey trade target, a goalie primed to become a No. 1 without the room to do so in Washington, where he played well during the regular season once again. If not Grubauer, would Lamoriello have interest in Marlies AHL Calder Cup champ Garrett Sparks? Lamoriello should find out if the Senators are serious about dealing Erik Karl son, and, if so, if there is a match between the two for a trade. The Isles should kick the tires on the top free agent d-man John Carlson, though a solid lower-cost defender like Ian Cole or Jack Johnson makes sense here, too.

It wasnot supposed to be this easy for theBlackhawks. over the Ducks in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals Saturday night sentthe Blackhawks on to their third Stanley Cup Final in six seasons. MORE: | The Blackhawks will face theLightning, who advanced to the championship series with their of the Eastern Conference finals. The two teams face Ryan Braun Jersey off in Game 1 in Tampa Bay on June 3 at 8 p.m. After a grueling, back-and-forth series that featured three overtime games (including a three-overtime affair) and four games decided by one goal, everyone expected a physical, close game between the Blackhawks and Ducks in Anaheim's Honda Center. Both teams were eager to put behind them the Ducks had lost in a Game 7 their past two postseason trips at home, no le s while the Blackhawks dropped Game 7 of the Western Conference finals last year to the Kings. The Blackhawks drew first blood just 2:23 into the game, when Jonathan Toews took a deflection off the pads of Frederik Andersen and punched it into the goal Alex Claudio Jersey from 10 feet away. Toews added a second goal on a 42-foot snap shoton a power play at 11:55 to give the Blackhawks a 2-0 lead. But the Blackhawks could not breathe easy, not against a bigger, more physical team that scored an incredible on them in Game 4. Oh, did we mention the Blackhawks held a 2-0 lead before falling to the Kings last year? So the Blackhawks went back to work. Brandon Saad scored on a short snapshot just 1:18 into the second period. And the Blackhawks padded their lead at the 13:45 mark when Marian Ho sa deflected the Eric Sogard Jersey puck off his skate into the net. Although the Ducks added a goal by Ryan Kesler late in the second period, then another goal by Corey Perry at the 11:35 mark of the third periodto make it a 4-2 game, this one still did not Hernan Perez Jersey seem in doubt. And when Chicago's Brent Seabrook answered with a sweet 51-foot snap shot le s than two minutes later, the Blackhawks really could breathe easier. A final Anaheim goal by Matt Beleseky with 42 seconds left provided the final margin. Thats a heck of a team," Toews told NBC after the game. "Im not saying we underestimated them coming into the series, but I think they proved how good of a team they were. We really had to earn every little bit of succe s we got. In the end, the Ducks actually outshot the Blackhawks38-26, but the difference was Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford, who notched 35 saves. "We just went out there and tried to make things difficult on Blank Jersey (Perry's)line," Toews said. "They wanted to play offense and for the most part we were pretty smart defensively against them. As for the Stanley Cup Final, the Lightning, by virtue of having a better record than the Blackhawks in the regular season, will hold home-ice advantage, hosting games 1, 2, 5 and 7, while the Blackhawks will be home for games 3, 4 and 6. The Blackhawks, who have won two of the past five Stanley Cup Finals, will seek their sixth championship overall. Tampa Bay, which entered the league in 1992, has won one Stanley Cup (2003-04). (Tampa Bay) is another great test," Toews said. "We can remember the games we had against them this regular season. If thats any sort of foreshadowing Mike Moustakas Jersey , its going to be a tough one, but well be ready for them.

A minute after Niklas Kronwall hit Nikita Kucherov on Monday night, it seemed impo sible that the NHL wouldn't suspend him. Half a day after, though, it felt far from guaranteed. There havebeen plenty of borderline hits so far in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but no suspensions, and whether Fred McGriff Jersey the league had the stomach to take a stand on an important playerahead of a Game 7 was a valid question. MORE: | Plus, plenty of reasonable people on Twitter had questions about whether the Red Wings defenseman's feet actually left the ice before impact, and that felt like the smoking gun. If you think Kronwall jumped into Kucherov, it was suspendable. If not . . .well, then it looked a lot like a whole bunch of other Kronwallings over the years, none of Luke Jackson Jersey which were suspension-worthy in the eyes of the league. We overanalyze these things, to the point where we're not sure what we'relooking at anymore. Seeds of doubt get planted Jose Ramirez Jersey . It's human nature or should be, at least to wonder whether your eyes are truly trustworthy. By Tuesday evening, we had the league-sanctioned answer. Yes, Kronwall left his feet. Yes, that was a deciding factor.Yes, he'll be suspended for Game 7 of Red Wings-Lightning on Wednesday night. In the NHL.com video explaining the decision Nick Markakis Jersey , Patrick Burke, director of the Department of Player Safety, noted that the hit was different than Kronwall's previous ones because he left his feet and didn't target Kucherov's core. "The combination of both of these two factors are what differentiates this hit from similar previous examples," Burke said. And it was the right call. It always, from here, looked like Kronwall left his feet, and the video hammered home the point. The DOPS gets a ton of flack Chipper Jones Jersey , and some of it is deserved, but it shouldn't here. Feet off the ground. Elbow to the face. Done deal. If either of those factors weren't in play, he'd have been able to skate with a fine. Both were, though. So it goes. It's a huge lo s for the Wings; Kronwall is their best defenseman, and the Lightning's non-Tyler Johnson forwards are due for a breakout any game now. It'll Preston Tucker Jersey be easier to come by thatwith their seasons on the line. As for Kronwall, he'll be judged as a repeat offender in any future cases. He'll keep getting away with the stuff he's always gotten away withbecause that's how this stuff works. Not if he leaves his feet, though. He's not allowed to do that, and on Monday, he did.

The Arizona Coyotes, who lost almost $35 Lane Thomas Jersey million during the 2014-15 NHL season, spent the weekend preparing for a legal battle with city officials in their suburban Phoenix home. At stake: millions of dollars in public subsidies. Their efforts started Friday after an influential Canadian sports website reported a Glendale, Ariz., leader wants to pursue legal options that would void a 15-year contract that gives the team $15 million per year. In the article on the , Glendale vice mayor Ian Hugh said the Dominic Leone Jersey $225 million agreement was supposed to go toward operation of Gila River Arena, the Coyotes' 12-year-old home. Hugh said the money is instead going to Fortre s Investment Group, a New York-based a set firm that financed the by IceArizona. Hugh claims that arrangement is a breach of contract. He hopes to get the city attorney to determine whether Glendale can get out of its contract Willie McGee Jersey . "The taxpayer got the short end of the stick," Hugh said. This story, by Leo Monahan, first appeared in The Sporting News dated May 9, 1970, as the Boston Bruins were marching to their first Stanley Cup since 1941. Leading the way: Bobby Orr, 22, in a remarkable fourth season with the team in which he won the Hart (regular-season MVP), Norris (top defenseman), Ro Yasmany Tomas Jersey s (most points) and Smythe (playoff MVP) trophies. BOSTON, Ma s. This is a helluva statement to make, and I'm sure I'll get a lot of flak over it, but he may be the greatest athlete who ever lived," said Boston Bruins Coach Harry Sinden. "The kid did it all in six games. If we had him, no one ever would touch us. What a player!" said New York Ranger General Manager Emile Francis after his team had been eliminated by Boston in six games of the Stanley Cup quarterfinals. "We'd give a whole team for him," said Sid Abel, general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. "It was futile," said Chicago Coach Billy Reay. "We'd shoot it in. He'd bring it out. That's another part of the game he has spoiled for everybody." Who could win this kind of applause? Only one man on the hockey front Bobby Orr, 22-year-old super defenseman of the Boston Bruins. Orr would be the first person to say pshaw, what-the-heck, forget-all-the-valentines routine. That's his style. Unlike teammate Derek Sanderson, who comes on like the Indianapolis 500, Orr is quiet, una suming Arizona Diamondbacks Jersey . He is, however, one great hockey player and Sinden may not be too far off the mark when he claims Orr could be the greatest athlete of all time. "All athletes have their limitations, right, eh?" said the Boston coach. Take Bill Ru sell. Great. No question. But he wasn't a shooter, was he? Look over all the guys in all the other sports and show me who put it together better than Bobby." He's Good With a Gun, Too "Look," Sinden continued, "we went hunting last fall. Bobby hadn't used a gun for five or six years. The dog flushed a bird and it sure was a tough shot. Bobby zeroed in on it quickly and brought it down. I'm convinced he can do anything he sets his mind to do." The primary thing Orr has in mind at the moment is playing hockey. And he is making money hand over fist. Orr and Toronto attorney Alan Eagleson became involved early in his career. Orr now lets Eagleson handle his multiple interests, and Bobby merely goes about the busine s of playing hockey, a busine s, incidentally, in which he led the NHL in scoring this season with 124 points. Leading the league in scoring is one thing. A defenseman leading the league in scoring is something else. He became the first defenseman to score 100-plus points, the first defenseman to top the league and to win the Art Ro s (scoring) trophy. Furthermore, he has revolutionized the game. Previously, defensemen were the unheralded creatures of the NHL Their job was to prevent goals, block shots and feed pa ses to breaking forwards. Orr changed all that. He still plays a good game on defense, but more often than not he sets sail down the middle of the rink and moves right on the goalkeeper. A defenseman who stepped much beyond the opponent's blue line was a rarity in days past. His outstanding ability, his clean-cut good looks and his busine s acumen lead to the general a sumption that Bobby Orr will be a millionaire, perhaps a couple times over, before he's 30. For one thing, Orr now is on the second season of a three-year contract. He gets Jeff Mathis Jersey about $75,000 a season, and bonus clauses hike his earnings. When Orr's contract expires, rumors have it that Eagleson will go to the Boston management with a longterm deal in mind-po sibly $2 million for a 10-year pact or $1 million for a five-year deal. A Bonanza for Bruins The Boston management has made nothing but money since Orr arrived on the scene. He's the difference between a few Stanley Cup championships and another succe sion of zilch. Whatever he asks, management is bound to pay. Orr has several busine s interests at the moment and more are on the horizon. Right now, Bobby has a piece of a car wash in Toronto. He operates a highly succe sful boys' hockey school in Orilla, Ont., during the offseason. Toronto's Mike Walton is his partner, among others, in this venture. He also owns a condominium apartment in Florida in partnership with goalkeeper Eddie Johnston. "The day is not far away, said Bobby Haggart, former Toronto Maple Leaf trainer who now is involved in a number of Orr's enterprises, "when Bobby's off-ice earnings will be greater than what he makes playing." This, indeed Zack Greinke Jersey , is a po sibility. Orr has appeal to the young set. He swings, to an extent. He's young, Blank Jersey 22, a bachelor, a public figure, makes the TV tube on any occasions. Furthermore, he drive a Cadillac, wears custom-made suits and has a bankroll. What more could a gal want, or a guy admire? Orr's outside interests, of course, are contingent on what he does on the hockey rink. No player ever has played the game like he has. The noble art of defense, let's face it, has changed forever. Take Emile (Cat) Francis. His beloved Rangers had just been beaten in six games by the Bruins. He wasnt in a very good mood. He was tired. Still, he was honest. Asked about Orr, Francis' replied: "I knew he was going to be a super star. I knew it when he was only coming along. But I never thought it would be this early. At 27, yes. But he's only 22 and he's the greatest performer in the game, ever. "Take anybody in any sport and no one has done what this kid has done. Do you know what he did to us in this series? Only seven goals. It's a record. It has to be. And for a defenseman! Without that kid, it's an even series." Bobby Ruined Us "Hockey," said Rod Gilbert, a member of the Rangers, "is supposed to be a team game. Everybody does his bit. But Bobby Orr, he runs the game. He ruined us." Billy Reay, coach of the Chicago Black Hawks, was next to get the Orr playoff treatment. In an early game in the series, Orr made Jake Lamb Jersey an end-to-end rush. He swept past Stan Mikita en route and bore down on the Hawk defense of Bill White and Paul Smyre, a rookie. Orr then made a lateral pa s to Fred Stanfield. The defense shifted to Stanfield. Orr stepped through the open defense, took Stanfield's return pa s and zeroed in to score on goalkeeper Tony Esposito. Game No. 3 was even more an example of Orr's skills. Once again he made an end-to-end rush. This time he had no chance to cut in for a shot on goal, so he swept around in back of the Chicago net. The Black Hawks were shorthanded at the time with Keith Magnuson in the penalty box Three Chicago defenders chased Orr behind the net. That left one Chicago defender to take care of four Boston attackers. So what happened? Orr flicked a pa s to Phil Esposito, who to sed a pa s to John Bucyk, wh

Monday night was always going to be a trip toTV ratings sadne s for the NHL; the league and NBC are relient on good Yoenis Cespedes Jersey showings from local markets.San Jose, already weak as far as those numbers are concerned, is also part of the San Francisco-Oakland market, and sports fans there had, uh, better things to do. Lo and behold, the numbers are in for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, and Asdrubal Cabrera Jersey they are ... not great. MORE: Overall,it got a 2.8 overnight rating. That's down from a 4.2 for last year,'s Game 1, which was fueled by the Chicago market, and the worst since the 2.4 Kings-Devils got in 2012. On TNT, Golden State and Oklahoma City were pulling in an 11.2, the NBA's highest-ever cable overnight. Most of all, in the Bay Area,Thunder-Warriorscurbstomped Sharks-Penguins. Pierre Dorion wanted to give his team an even better chance to contend for the Stanley Cup after last season's near-mi s, while Matt Duchene simply desired the opportunity to once again take part in the playoffs. Such are the roots of why Matt Duchene today is an Ottawa Senator following Dansby Swanson Jersey involving the Colorado Avalanche, Nashville Predators and Senators. "We all know that the future is always now, and we feel we are on the right path" Dorion said at Monday's pre s conference in Ottawa. "The players have taken it upon themselves to continue that path they were on last year...and we are really encouraged the direction the team is going. After a great playoff run last year, we feel we've added an elite forward to our group. We think (Duchene) will make an impact here. We're a better hockey team today." MORE:Matt Duchene chooses sweater No. 95 Dorion delivered a simple and direct me sage. The Sens were one goal away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final last spring and the players proved to management they are contenders once again this Tom Glavine Jersey season, and deserved an added boost that a player of Duchene's skill level should provide. "These guys really want to win," explained Dorion. "These guys are showing us they're going to do everything in their power to performto their best ability. When they perform, they you have to do something." That something turned out to be the acquisition of the 26 Chipper Jones Jersey -year-old Duchene, who recorded 178 goals and 428 points in 586 career games, all with an Avalanche team he grewup a fan of, but ultimately sought a trade from last December. "Asking for a trade out of Colorado, from (GM) Joe Sakic who was my idol, was the hardest thing I've ever had to do," offered Duchene on Monday. "Last year when it happened, I kind of saw the writing on the wall with the future of that franchise. We had a horrific year last year and I could see a rebuild coming, something I'd been a part of multiple times, and I just couldn't do it. I just wanted to play playoff hockey. I only get one shot at this." Having represented Canada in many International tournaments --winning gold medals at the 2014 Winter Olympics, multiple World Championships and 2008 World Junior Championships, to go along with winning the 2016 World Cup of R.A. Dickey Jersey Hockey -- Duchene hungersto play meaningful NHL games. During his tenure in Colorado, the Avs reached the postseason only twice, with Duchene managing to play just eight playoff games, so far, in his career. That is what led to his decision to walk into Sakic's office and ask out -- though it would take nearly a full year before a trade finally happened. "This is a team that was one goal away from the Stanley Cup," Duchene said of the Senators. "That's something I am dying for, is to have the opportunity at that. To be here on this team that I believe in a lot already, it's very special; and I just want to bring my best to this team. I want to be part of a long playoff run. That's the goal." The Sens are 6-3-5 to start the season, earning points in eight of 14 games despite some keyinjuries. Duchene joined the club at practice Monday, centering a line with Zack Smith and Mike Hoffman, who is tied for second on the Babe Ruth Jersey team with 13 points. forward Matt Duchene speaks to media following his first practice with the team. Ottawa Senators (@Senators) Bob Uecker Jersey The whirlwind continues for him as the team leaves for Sweden where the Senators face off with -- drum roll please -- the Avalanche on Friday and Saturday in Stockholm. Duchene called facing his former team right away "strange..weird...tough", but added that it will provide "extra motivation" right away. Matt Duchene's Sens debut: How to watch, when, where, live blog However, his main motivation is in reaching the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2013-14 and to fulfill Dorion's prophecy. "We checked with the league and we're pretty sure that they're going to keep the puck the same size." Doughty, who played a game-high 28:02, was not penalized on the play. The Kings are also expected to still be without defenseman Jake Muzzin in Game 2, who mi sed the opening of the series and the final five of the regular season with an upper-body injury. Seguin, if you check the stats, is third in the NHL in scoring with 29 goals and 30 a sists. Looking at the hit, it's no wonder Ruff called the Kulikov low-bridge dirty. Maybe the kindest thing Ruff said was the defenseman's play was "a shot that Joe Montana Jersey didn't need to happen." Kulikov received a five-minute major and a game misconduct on Friday. More will come. "It's Damien Wilson Jersey just something that you end up taking your best player out of the game," Ruff said. "Not only out of the game, but he's taken him out of the lineup for a little bit for us. We'll let the league deal with it. I used to yell and scream about it, but it doesn't do any good."
